Has Glee already jumped the shark?

So we finally watched the season premiere of "Glee" last night - and agreed that who ever gets to write lines for Jane Lynch's character of Sue Sylvester has the best job in the world.

  • “A female football coach, like a male nurse? Sin against nature.”
  • “The two of you are making a mistake, the likes of which have not been seen since the Mexicans sold Manhattan to George Washington for an upskirt photo of Betsy Ross.”
And the one that made me rewind our DVR twice to re-watch this exchange:
  • Coach Beiste: You're all coffee and no omeletSue: That doesn't make any sense.

Here are some of Sue’s best lines from Season 1:

I’m a little concerned about my continued enjoyment of this show after reading a report today that producers have signed Gwyneth Paltrow for a series of guest shots on the show later this season.

Isn’t Glee going a little overboard with the stunt celebrity cameos? Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Grobin, Olivia Newton-John, and Broadway stars Idina Menzel, Cheyenne Jackson, and Kristin Chenoweth are just a few of the stars who’ve already appeared. And worse, it seems the show is now hooked on “theme nights” - featuring the music of one artist like Lady Gaga, Madonna, and this week, Britney Spears.

Have producers – after just one season – lost all of their creative energy in finding interesting story lines for the original cast members, and now rely on stunt cameos and gimmicks?

  1. I'm with you on this one... Seems they're trying too hard to introduce guests and new cast members rather than focusing on the ones that hooked us all in... in the first place...

  2. I was going to disagree, but then I saw the britney episode last night.
What a disjointed Glee-less episode. No spark. No fun. No good songs.
I don't mind the casting of some folks. NPH? Loved. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth? Loved.
    Paltrow? No.No. And No.

  3. She is my favorite character on television right now too. I think she is hilarious.

  4. They have jumped the shark. WAY too many guest stars and most of them ill fitting.

That Madonna episode tried way to hard, and having the cast sing Britney Spears songs - which were watered down versions of watered down versions of music was just sad.

If it weren't for the character Britney, the episode would have been a TOTAL loss.

I will say this: I'm kind of looking forward to Carol Burnett as Sue's mom, but they better focus a bit more, or it's become the 'Love Boat' - and that ain't good.

  5. And I've been wondering, really how long can Glee last, anyway? They're already going to be graduating at the end of the year, right? Or is it just perpetual high school?

I've enjoyed the guest and them episodes, I think that is just part of the Glee signature, but I do agree that they're forgetting about the characters.

  6. Naughty was thinking EXACTLY the same thing about sharks and Glee. And then Kurt's dad had a heart attack in episode three, and we got to find out about everyone's religious persuasions. As an atheist, I was thrilled, I tell you, to have some smart things said about those of us who are godless yet good people. My hope for the series was renewed through the whole Chesus thing, too. And Puck singing Billy Joel. Hot, no? Naughty always liked the bad boys but knew well enough to marry a good boy.
