A tree grows in Devonport

Actually, a LOT of beautiful trees grow and prosper in Devonport, the little village across the harbor that we visited yesterday. We pretty much stayed on the main drag, loaded with cafes, bookstores, and other nice little shops. We did enjoy our ice cream in a beautiful park, where I took the photo of the majestic tree below. In addition to being a lovely town, Devonport is also home to a naval base and fortresses built into Mt. Victoria and North Head. According to our trusty Lonely Planet guide, both have gun embankments, and North Head is filled with secret tunnels that were built in the 19th century in response to the Russian threat, and then extended during the two World Wars. The second shot below is a "picture of a picture" of old-time Devonport that was hanging in the ferry terminal.

  2. I went to Devonport. And the gun on top of the hill. The hike up there was incredible and the wind on top was amazing. Cool.
