Who will win at this year’s Academy Awards?

So the Oscars will be presented with much hoopla in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 26. And although we’ll be back in Boston by then, "fresh" from our trip to New Zealand, I can’t guarantee that having just flown across 18 times zones, that I’ll be in any shape to get my Oscar guesses formalized. So here, a few weeks early, are my guesses for who will bring home the gold. If there are any readers out there who’d like to make this interesting (Hi Blobby!), feel free to comment below or post your predictions on your blog and let’s see how we stack up.

In reviewing the full list of nominees, I must admit that I’ve seen NONE of the films nominated for “Best Picture” nor any films features in the the acting categories. Hell, I’ve not even seen this year’s “Short Films, Animated”! My enthusiasm for going to the movies has really dwindled over the past few years, maybe because of folks like these. Or maybe, as the name of my blog suggests, I really do suffer from short attention span. Or just maybe it's become way too easy to plop on the couch in the comfort of my own home and watch what I want when I want. So I had to do a little online research to try and figure out who the winners might be come Oscar night. When it got to the more obscure categories, I ended up picking the nominees whose names I can best imagine being called out loud.

So here goes nothing. May the best man/woman win. With no further ado, may I have the envelope please…

  1. I'm writing my acceptance speech. I will NOT be played off by the music.

  2. George Clooney was terrible in his role of the grieving spouse in "The Descendants". It made me question his abilities as an actor. Normally we see him in the same sort of role and he doesn't have (or show) the depth that this one required. I went to see the movie last weekend and the French people's disappointment in the theatre was palpable....and you should have heard the comments on the way out!

The "Iron Lady hasn't come out yet over here, but Meryl Streep is great in whatever role she plays.

  3. I loved "The Artist"! It deserves lots of Oscars. I think George Clooney should win the Oscar for his awkward running scene in The Descendents (At least I hope he was acting...). That completes my experience watching nominated movies - I'm getting as bad as you.

  4. Blobby - you are counting those pretty little chickens pretty early...

Mary Kay - HA! I think George has achieved that "golden boy" status in Hollywood - and that folks will drool over his every move - no matter the quality. I say this without having seen the movie - but he's starting to get on my nerves. Sort of like Julie Roberts -- but i digress.

Julie - George running can't be any more awkward than my running. Perhaps we'll make a special trip to the theater to see The Artist. I heard there were a lot of car chases and explosions in that film!

  5. I agree w Mary Kay. Clooney seems to play the same (or similar) character in all his movies. He's fairly one-note in terms of acting. He seems nice enough and nice enough to look at but where's the depth? I was going to say where's the meat......but I knew someone would take it in an unsavory direction.
